Lymphatic filariasis (LF), commonly known as elephantiasis is a disfiguring, disabling disease. Swelling at leg makes it appear like elephant leg, hence is the name Elephantiasis.
Lymphatic filariasis is transmitted through mosquito bites. The microfilariae enter the body of a mosquito when it feeds on the blood of a person carrying microfilariae in their blood. Many mosquito bites over several months to years are needed to get lymphatic filariasis. People living for a long time in filaria endemic areas( Himalayan belt, part of U.P., Bihar Bengal ). where the disease is common are at the greatest risk for infection. Sporadic cases are also found. The infection can be detected by a night blood survey.
At first, most people usually do not feel any symptoms until after the adult worms die. The disease usually is not life-threatening, but it can permanently damage the lymph system and kidneys. Because the lymph system does not work right, fluid collects and causes swelling in the arms, breasts, and legs. The name for this swelling is lymphoedema. For men, the genital area also becomes swollen, a condition known as hydrocele. Also, the swelling and the decreased function of the lymph system make it difficult for the body to fight germs and infections. These people will have more bacterial infections in the skin and lymph system. This causes hardening and thickening of the skin, which is called elephantiasis. ( Chyluria- the milky urine disease is one of the complications of Lymphatic filariasis).
This patient has visited at Dr.Ravi’s Lucknow center with complaints of recurrent intense fever, swelling at leg and pus discharge. He was a well-diagnosed case of Filaria and he was suffering from recurrent attacks of filaria for more than 5 years. This time swelling at leg and feet increased for one month and pus discharge started from the leg. There were pain and discomfort. He was much worried about the condition as after a few months he has to appear in the entrance examination of the Indian Army. He was depressed assuming he will not qualify physical fitness due to the disease. He has been told about our mode of treatment through the hair but unable to believe in the first instance. The treatment has been started after a detailed case taking with an indicated remedy by inserting his hair in the vial.
