Patient Story
Disease : Umbilical Cord Infection
Last Updated on : 26 Sep 2015
Case Started on : 11 Sep 2015
Omphalitis, or umbilical sepsis, is a bacterial infection of the umbilical stump and surrounding tissues. Widespread aseptic umbilical cord care has greatly reduced its occurrence. A bacterial infection through an open wound of the umbilical cord or surrounding tissue is the usual cause, although primary bacteremia with seeding of the umbilical stump can occur.
Risk factors for the development of this infection include home delivery, low birth weight, and factors associated with neonatal sepsis, such as chorioamnionitis, preterm labor, and rupture of membranes for greater than 8 hours.
This baby has been shown to Dr. Ravi at his Balrampur clinic.
